I wasn’t expecting this painting to be about women’s suffrage. I’ve been experimenting in modified portraits for some time. With one, I converted a head to fishbowl. In working through a birdcage concept, I began thinking about a newspaper lining–which sent me to headlines from a century ago.
Once I landed on suffrage, I opened the cage and let the bird out, liberating the young woman as well.
