Long-Suffraging

I wasn’t expecting this painting to be about women’s suffrage. I’ve been experimenting in modified portraits for some time. With one, I converted a head to fishbowl. In working through a birdcage concept, I began thinking about a newspaper lining–which sent me to headlines from a century ago.

Once I landed on suffrage, I opened the cage and let the bird out, liberating the young woman as well.

ABOUT

I take bad and discarded art, generally from thrift stores, and ‘improve’ on them. For a complete collection of my art, a term I use very loosely, go to matthewfranck.com/portfolio
