School transfers

Few Missouri Supreme Court rulings have had the kind of impact as one issued in June 2013 on a decades-old but largely untested Missouri statute. Now that law — which allows students in unaccredited school districts to transfer to better schools — must be enforced.

It’s a ruling that prompted nearly 2,600 students from Riverview and Normandy schools to migrate to school districts across the St. Louis region. Accommodating those students — within weeks or days of the start of the new school year — has been an unprecedented logistical challenge.

Reporters Jessica Bock and Elisa Crouch documented the tumultuous school year, telling compassionate stories of the families who switched schools seeking a better education.

This interactive timeline captures just some of the more than 100 stories they wrote on the issue.
